Old houses deserve better than a quick fix
Snohomish has genuinely old housing stock, and some of it is worth real care. Farmhouses, early century homes, places that have been altered several times by people with varying levels of interest in doing it properly. Working on those is a different discipline from building new.
The approach we take is to understand what the house originally was before deciding what it should become. Original framing, previous alterations, what is structural and what somebody just added. That assessment costs a little at the front and prevents a great deal of improvisation later.
Heavy timber sits naturally in this kind of work. Where a structural change is needed, an exposed beam can look like it belongs in a house of that age rather than like a modern intrusion, particularly when it is Douglas Fir milled to the right dimension rather than the nearest available size.
