Timber Frame in Edmonds

The work that makes the whole brand make sense.

Timber Frame & Heavy Timber · Edmonds, Snohomish County

Edmonds is a design-literate, waterfront arts community — the Bowl, the ferry, the galleries. Buyers here notice craft, and a timber-forward custom home or thoughtful remodel reads as exactly the kind of quality the town is known for.

Timber frame is where Svensen is unmatched. We do not specify a timber package and wait on a vendor — we run the log through our own mill and engineer the frame through our own product line.

That control shows up in the structure: oversized members cut true to grade, joinery detailed for the design, and a frame that reads as the centerpiece of the building rather than something hidden in the walls.

What we build

  • Full timber-frame and post-and-beam structures
  • Hybrid timber and conventional framing
  • Exposed structural timber for homes, restaurants, and commercial space
  • EV TimberShield engineered glass-and-timber canopies
  • Custom-milled oversized Douglas Fir members
  • FSC Chain-of-Custody timber on request
Timber frame in Edmonds

Real material in a town that can tell the difference

Edmonds notices. That is a compliment and a standard. Applied beams and faux brackets do not survive scrutiny here, and nor should they. Real structure does, and it is one of the reasons we enjoy working in this town.

On compact Bowl lots the timber usually appears inside rather than as a full frame: a great room structure, an exposed roof, a stair that uses the material properly. Done at the right scale it makes a modest house feel considered rather than merely finished.

The grain is part of it. Coast Douglas Fir from our own mill is tight, straight and worth looking at, and we cut it to the dimension the room needs. A timber that is honestly sized and honestly jointed is a different object from one selected because it was in stock.

Coast Douglas Fir, milled at our own yard, cut to the room.
What matters
Real structure and visible joinery rather than applied decoration.

Contemporary work that still sits comfortably in an older town.
The Svensen advantage

Raw Douglas Fir log → milled oversized timber at Washington Timber Company → engineered structure through EV TimberShield → raised and finished by Svensen. No middlemen, no markups stacked on markups, no waiting on a supplier to tell us what is in stock. This is the supply chain, and we own all of it.

How the supply chain works

The supply-chain moat

We own the sawmill (Washington Timber Company), the engineered product line (EV TimberShield), and the build crew (Svensen). One company controls cost and quality from the forest to your finished frame. No competitor in the region can say that.

The process

From log to raised frame

01

Engineer the frame

Members are sized and detailed for your design and load case — not pulled from a catalog.

02

Mill to spec

Oversized Douglas Fir is milled at our own sawmill to the exact dimensions the drawings call for.

03

Fabricate joinery

Connections and joinery are cut and dry-fit before anything reaches the site.

04

Raise & integrate

The frame is raised by our crew and integrated into the full build.

FAQ

Timber Frame in Edmonds: FAQ

Where does your timber come from?

From our own sawmill, Washington Timber Company in Arlington. We mill local Douglas Fir to spec for Edmonds projects — we don’t order imported timber-frame kits or wait on a supplier’s catalog.

Do you build timber frame homes in Edmonds?

Yes. We design, mill, engineer, and raise full timber-frame and post-and-beam structures throughout Edmonds and the surrounding Puget Sound — homes, restaurants, and commercial spaces.

How is a Svensen timber frame different from a kit?

A kit ships you pre-cut parts to assemble. We mill the members to your design, engineer the joinery, and raise the frame ourselves — so the timber is sized for your Edmonds build, not the other way around.

Our house is small. Does timber framing still make sense?

Often more sense than in a large house. A well-proportioned exposed structure in a modest Edmonds home makes it feel considered rather than merely finished, and it is usually better value than the same money spent on square footage. Scale it to the room and it lifts everything around it.

How do we avoid it looking like a fake beam?

By using real ones. Applied brackets and hollow box beams do not survive close inspection, and in this town they will get it. Structure that is genuinely carrying load, jointed honestly and sized correctly, reads completely differently. We mill our own timber so the dimension is right rather than approximate.
